Make It a Double? Sobering Results from Simulations Using Single-Moment Microphysics Schemes

چکیده
Single-moment microphysics schemes have long enjoyed popularity for their simplicity and efficiency. However, in this article it is argued through theoretical considerations, idealized thunderstorm simulations, and radiative–convective equilibrium (RCE) simulations that the assumptions inherent in these parameterizations can induce large errors in the proper representation of clouds and their feedbacks to the atmosphere. For example, precipitation is shown to increase by 200% through changes to fixed parameters in a singlemoment scheme and low-cloud fraction in the RCE simulations drops from about 15% in double-moment simulations to about 2% in single-moment simulations. This study adds to the large body of work that has shown that double-moment schemes generally outperform single-moment schemes. Therefore, it is recommended that future studies, regardless of their focus and especially those employing cloud-resolvingmodels to simulate a realistic atmosphere, strongly consider moving to the exclusive use of multimoment microphysics schemes.

Effects of Cloud Parameterization on Radiation and Precipitation: A Comparison Between Single-Moment Microphysics and Double-Moment Microphysics
This study compares a single-moment microphysics scheme to a double-moment microphysics scheme using four observed cases of a mesoscale cloud system. Previous studies comparing a single-moment microphysics scheme to a doublemoment microphysics scheme have focused on microphysical processes or overall dynamics, precipitation and morphology of cloud systems. However, they have not focused on how ...

متن کاملImpacts of a-priori databases using six WRF microphysics schemes on passive microwave rainfall retrievals
Physically based rainfall retrievals from passive microwave sensors often make use of cloud-resolving models (CRMs) to build a priori databases of potential rain structures. EachCRM, however, has its own cloud microphysics assumptions. Hence, approximated microphysics may cause uncertainties in the a priori information resulting in inaccurate rainfall estimates. This study first builds a priori...

متن کاملA new double moment approach for the warm-rain process based on the WSM6 scheme (WDM6)
The double-moment approach for the bulk microphysics schemes that allows more flexibility of the size distribution enabling the mean diameter to evolve in contrast to the single-moment approach has become one of the promising methods to improve microphysical processes in the mesoscale modeling area. Cohard and Pinty (2000b) showed the superiority of a double-moment approach in two-dimensional e...
